NRC Book Group visits Ft. Johnson

DSCN4853The women of the NRC Book Group visited Ft. Johnson in Amsterdam, NY on July 9 and learned about the life of Sir William Johnson and his contributions to the settlement of the Mohawk Valley area from Site Manager, Scott Haefner, who is also a member of the NRC and the son of our own Norma Lovell.  Scott has a vast knowledge of the life of Sir William and his family and was able to share many interesting stories.  We started our visit in the Visitor Center with a video about Johnson and continued on to the main house where we viewed the various furnished rooms and displays on all three floors.  Although the rainy day kept us from being able to fully enjoy the gardens, we noted their beauty and authenticity to the period.  The well-kept “privvy” on the grounds was another interesting sight.  Following the tour, the group lunched at Russo’s Restaurant in Amsterdam.  Suffice it to say that no one went home hungry!   The outing was organized by Ann Duncan, a member of the Book Group.  For more information about the Book Group or these annual outings, which are open to “friends of the Book Group,” contact Ann Duncan, Trudy Lehner, or any member.
